01/ Overview

The route

The long descent from Bosco Gurin – mostly along the wild Rovana River or further up the valley flank – reaches the wide valley floor at Cevio. Upstream, following the Maggia, the hike ends after a detour to the historical site of Sott Piodau in Bignasco, where the Valle Maggia divides.

From the Bosco/Gurin, Paese bus stop, the hike begins almost at the highest point of the route, at around 1,500 metres. The mountain trail leaves the houses of Bosco Gurin and leads mainly downhill, initially across open meadows and then repeatedly through woodland. The 1,500 metres of descent are not evenly distributed: counter-ascents add up to around 420 metres over the 16 kilometres. After just under two hours, the houses of Collinasca come into view; the trail passes close to the small church.

Continuing down the valley, the mountain trail reaches Linescio and passes directly by the Chiesa di San Remigio. Stretches of woodland alternate with open slopes until the long descent gradually levels out near Cevio. The final three kilometres or so follow a yellow-waymarked hiking trail between the houses and past Biètt. After just under five hours, the route ends in Bignasco, only a few steps from the Bignasco, Posta bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
