01/ Overview
The route
While the first half of this section is flat, the second part climbs high above Lake Zurich. Initially, the path is a paved road and leads across meadows and past residential areas through the rolling landscape. Bridges crossing a number of creeks and several chapels are a reminder of an old pilgrim’s path in this area.
The three-hour hike through the open cultivated landscape between Siebnen and St. Meinrad begins at the Siebnen, Aabrücke bus stop. Following marked hiking trails throughout, the route leaves the village and passes the St. Jost Chapel, which stands on the old country road near Galgenen.
The route initially continues across meadows and through a succession of small settlements, gaining little elevation. Around the halfway point, the trail passes the St. Johann Chapel. Its chancel stands on the foundations of the round castle chapel of Alt-Rapperswil, a medieval hilltop castle. Shortly afterwards, the route passes the Johannisburg inn.
The ascent then defines the second half. Passing Mittlisberg and Bilsten, the trail climbs steadily across open meadows. After around eleven kilometres, St. Meinrad near Einsiedeln is both the finish and the highest point, at just over 820 m. The nearest public transport stop, Pfäffikon SZ, Abzw. Etzelpass, is around 1.3 kilometres from the finish.
