01/ Overview

The route

In autumn 1799, Russian General Suvorov and his army crossed through the Swiss Alps in order to oust the French from the country. The ViaSuworow follows the route of this campaign through breathtaking mountain landscape.

From Airolo, the mountain trail climbs to the Passo del San Gottardo. Steeped in history, the pass was an important north–south route across the Alps for centuries. Beyond it, the route leads via Hospental and Andermatt down through the Urner Reusstal, passing Göschenen, Wassen and Amsteg before reaching Altdorf.

The next major ascent begins in Bürglen. Crossing alpine pastures and following mountain trails, the route reaches Chinzig Chulm at around 2,070 m; it then continues into the Muotatal and on to the Pragelpass. The descent into the Klöntal brings a striking change: along the shore of the Klöntalersee, the trail follows the water before continuing to Riedern and Glarus. The route leads through woodland and across open meadows via Matt to Elm.

Beyond Elm, the terrain becomes rockier and steeper again. Near the Rotstock, the route reaches its highest point at just over 2,400 m, followed shortly afterwards by the Panixerpass and its mountain shelter. The trail now loses elevation via Pigniu and Rueun. After Schnaus, the final kilometres lead to Ilanz, where the 170-kilometre route ends near the stop.
