01/ Overview

The route

After the rock outcrop at Stalvedro the trail winds its way down to the floor of the Leventina valley. Alongside the Ticino River and changing from one bank to the other, you reach Rodi and the Dazio Grande customs house, one of the impressive symbols of the ViaGottardo.

The almost four-hour hike begins at the Airolo stop with a short ascent. Between houses and open meadows, the trail quickly gains height before entering the forest and passing close to the Torre dei Pagani. After just over a kilometre, the highest point is reached at around 1'180 m. The gradient then eases, and the route descends along a continuously waymarked hiking trail.

Beyond the forest, the route alternates between pastures, small settlements and quieter stretches of trail. At Piotta, a small balancing reservoir lies directly on the route, its shoreline adding a pleasant feature to the valley walk. The trail continues with gentle ups and downs through Quinto and later to Fiesso. Towards the end, the route is predominantly downhill. The 14-kilometre hike ends in Rodi, near the Rodi, Casa Gendotti stop.
