01/ Overview
The route
Anyone who likes hiking downhill will like this stage: it connects the Gotthard Pass with Andermatt, the capital of the Urseren Valley. The old mule track takes you down to the lively Hospen Valley with countless places to take a break or stay overnight. You reach the destination for this stage along by the Reuss and the extensive golf course of the Swiss Alps resort.
From the Gotthard Passhöhe stop, the mountain trail initially climbs gently. After just under one kilometre, the route reaches its highest point at just over 2,100 m. Open upland terrain characterises the start. From the Middle Ages until the construction of the railway and motorway tunnels, the Gotthardpass was an important north–south route across the Alps.
The route then heads steadily down into the valley. The white-red-white waymarked trail descends for an extended stretch through open terrain. Short counter-climbs add variety without changing the character of the hike. After around nine kilometres, Hospental comes into view. At the St. Karl-Kapelle, the route joins a yellow-waymarked hiking trail. The tower of the Herren von Hospental also comes into view here.
The final kilometres lead more gently through increasingly built-up surroundings to Andermatt. The destination is reached after a total of 13 kilometres and just over three hours. The Andermatt, Tourist Info stop is located immediately beside the endpoint.
