01/ Overview

The route

The trail leads above the tree line through the headwaters of the Ticino, affording spectacular views. The Ägene Valley is reached via the barren, stony Nufenen Pass. Steadily downhill and over beautiful bridges, the route follows the Ägene River into the Goms Valley with its typical dark wooden houses and white churches.

This summer hike begins at Capanna Piansecco CAS at 1,982 m, high above All'Acqua in Val Bedretto. The nearest bus stop is around one kilometre away. From the hut, the white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs steadily through open Alpine pastures and later across rocky terrain.

After just over two hours, the route approaches Nufenenpass, which links Valais and Ticino. Shortly before the pass, the highest point is reached at around 2,450 m near Nufenenstock. Here, the Alpine pastures give way to barren, rocky terrain. Beyond the pass area, a long descent begins; initially, the mountain trail remains exposed and stony.

At Ladstafel, the trail becomes gentler and continues downhill on yellow-waymarked paths. The open slope gradually gives way to forest, and farther down the first houses of Obergoms come into view. Shortly before the destination, the route passes directly by the Sankt-Anna-Kapelle. A little later, it ends in Obergesteln, just a few steps from the stop of the same name.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
