Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 34/43

The route leads through barren, stony mountain landscapes past numerous lakes and beautiful Alpine flora. Right at the beginning, two passes are climbed, affording stunning mountain views. On the way down to the valley, typical Valais chalets and robust, black Eringen cows enhance the hiking experience.

The hike begins not far from the Le Grand-St-Bernard, Hospice stop, at the top of the Great St Bernard Pass. At the hospice, the white-red-white marked mountain trail sets off and climbs through open, increasingly rocky terrain to the Pas des Chevaux. The route continues between scree and sparse alpine meadows to the Col du Bastillon.

Shortly afterwards, the highest point of the tour is reached at around 2,750 m. Near the Monts Telliers, views open up across the high-lying hollows and towards the three small Lacs de Fenêtre. The trail then turns downhill. The long descent gradually leaves the rocky terrain behind and returns to open alpine pastures.

At Ferret, the trail broadens and follows the Val Ferret down the valley. Via Les Granges and Le Clou, the route finally leads to La Fouly. After around 16 kilometres and a good five hours, the hike ends near the La Fouly VS (télésiège) stop.
