01/ Overview
The route
This stage first takes you along a forest trail to the left of the river. You then go to the right of the river along the historic path from Liddes to the small chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette before reaching Bourg-St. Pierre.
From the Orsières, La Place bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail heads uphill. Orsières is soon left behind. The route climbs steadily through open meadows and pastures as well as sections of forest. Small settlements punctuate the long ascent. After around five kilometres, the route reaches Fornex and Rive Haute, followed later by Dranse.
About two-thirds of the way along, the trail passes through Liddes. Shortly afterwards, the Chapelle de St. Etienne stands directly beside the route. Beyond Palasuit, the surroundings open up again as the hiking trail continues to gain elevation. The total ascent is around 950 metres.
Shortly before the destination, the highest point of the hike is reached at around 1'630 m. The trail then passes Notre Dame de Lorette before descending briefly to Bourg-St-Pierre. A little over four hours should be allowed for the 14 kilometres. The nearest bus stop, Bourg-St-Pierre, Commune, is around 300 metres from the end of the route.
