01/ Overview
The route
At first, the route leads steadily up to the Col de Susanfe with a magnificent view of the Dents du Midi. The Cabane de Susanfe, a classic SAC mountain hut from 1930, is set in the midst of green meadows. From there, the descent to the Val d'Illiez is quite steep.
The hike begins at the Cabane de Salanfe, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Van-d’en-Haut, camping, is just under two kilometres away. Right from the start, the mountain trail passes close to the Lac de Salanfe reservoir and climbs gradually over open slopes into rocky terrain.
After around five kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at the Col de Susanfe, at just over 2'500 m. The ascent totals around 1'000 metres of elevation gain. The long descent then defines the remainder of the hike. The white-red-white waymarked trail leads through barren terrain to the Pas d’Encel before continuing to lose elevation.
Over the final few kilometres, the mountain trail becomes a yellow-waymarked hiking trail. Barme is reached after 15 kilometres and just under six hours. The Champéry, Barme stop is around 200 metres from the finishing point.
