01/ Overview
The route
Leading up from the valley of «Vallon de Van» to the Lac de Salanfe at the foot of the Dents du Midi, this hiking trail passes through a wild Alpine landscape to an abandoned gold mine.
The circular hike starts in Van d’en Haut at the Van-d’en-Haut, camping bus stop. The mountain trail, marked white-red-white throughout, climbs through forest and open pastures. Near the start, La fontaine des bouquetins lies directly on the route, with the waterfall providing an early highlight.
After the long ascent, the trail reaches Lac de Salanfe. The reservoir forms the scenic centrepiece of the circuit. The mountain trail then continues through increasingly rocky terrain to the highest point near La Golette, at just under 2,000 m.
The return route leads down over open slopes and through forest to Van d’en Haut. The total ascent and descent amount to around 720 metres. After 13 kilometres and just over four hours, the circuit ends back at the Van-d’en-Haut, camping bus stop.
