01/ Overview
The route
Just after St. Maurice you reach Vérolliez, where a small chapel commemorates the martyrdom of Saint Maurice and his companions. On the way to the Rhone Valley, you come across the famous Pissevache waterfall and the 200 metre-deep Trient Gorge.
From St-Maurice railway station, the hiking trail initially leads to Vérolliez. Passing the Chapelle des Martyrs, it leaves the houses behind and continues alternately across open meadows and through woodland. The first section climbs gently; after around four kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at about 530 metres. It then continues towards Evionnaz.
Via La Balmaz, the trail continues to Miéville. There, the Pissevache lies a short distance off the route: the approximately 120-metre-high waterfall is fed by the Salanfe. Fields, stretches of woodland and villages alternate along the way; in La Balmaz, the route passes directly by Café Pernollet.
Beyond Miéville, the hiking trail leads via Gueuroz into the increasingly continuous built-up area of Martigny. After 16 kilometres and just over four hours, the hike ends near the Grand Verger stop.
