01/ Overview
The route
This trail takes you to the alpine foothill landscape of Appenzellerland, from Urnäsch to Alpweiden at the foot of Säntis and Schwägalp. From the Hochalp to the Schwägalp you will walk through the Schwägalp natural park, a protected natural site with a very special appeal.
From Urnäsch railway station, the trail initially leads through the village and past the Reformed church. The houses are soon left behind as the route climbs steadily out of the valley through meadows, pastures and patches of woodland.
After around two and a half hours, Hochalp takes centre stage. Near its summit, the hike reaches its highest point at just over 1,500 m. Hochalp is part of the Appenzell Alps and lies around eight kilometres as the crow flies from the Säntis. The broad hiking trail then continues over gently undulating terrain, with open stretches repeatedly revealing views of the surrounding heights.
In the final third, the route gradually loses elevation and approaches Schwägalp. After around 16 kilometres and a little over five hours, the hike ends at Säntis, directly beside the Schwägalp, Säntis-Schwebebahn bus stop.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
