01/ Overview
The route
The Hunwiler Höhe is a popular hiking destination. Hikers can enjoy a splendid view from the Alpstein to Lake Constance from the summit of the pyramid-shaped elevation. Just as well known, as the mountain is the restaurant at its summit, where various specialties await the hungry hiker.
The circular hike begins at the Zürchersmühle bus stop in Urnäsch. The trail initially passes through the scattered settlement and by Restaurant Säntisblick. Open meadows and pastures soon dominate the scenery. The ascent remains noticeable for long stretches and leads increasingly into the tranquil hills of the Appenzell hinterland.
Woodland alternates with open terrain as the trail steadily gains elevation. Just over halfway along the route, it reaches its highest point near Hundwiler Höhi at just under 1'300 m. The actual summit lies a little off the route; the circuit continues along its flank before turning downhill again.
The return route follows yellow-waymarked hiking trails through woodland and across pastures down to Zürchersmühle. After around nine kilometres and just over 500 metres of elevation gain, the circuit ends back at the bus stop. Just under three hours should be allowed for the entire route.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
