Appenzeller Weg, Stage 3/3

The route leads along the old Kirchweg via Tüfenberg with panoramic views of Schönengrund, waiting with its traditional taverns. On the other side of the Tüfibach stream (cantonal boundary), the old Toggenburg Landstrasse leads to the St. Gallen region and the former St. Peterzell Propstei Church.

From Urnäsch railway station, the yellow-marked hiking trail leads out of the village, initially following the Buechebach. The main ascent through open, hilly countryside soon begins. After around two and a half kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near the Hochhamm at just over 1,100 m. The biggest climb is already complete.

Meadows and pastures now dominate the landscape. The trail continues across the broad uplands in a gentle series of ascents and descents, though generally heading downhill. Just over halfway along the route lies Schönengrund, where the trail passes the Reformed church in the village. Open countryside and small settlements then alternate.

Towards the end, the trail once again descends significantly, reaching St. Peterzell after around 11 kilometres. The Protestant Reformed church stands close to the finish. A little over three hours should be allowed for this varied hike, which involves a total ascent of around 400 metres and a descent of just over 500 metres. The St. Peterzell, Dorf bus stop is only a few steps away.
