01/ Overview
The route
Robber tales, twelve activity stations and a picnic area accompany this short woodland circuit through the legendary Kernwald between Obwalden and Nidwalden.
From the Kerns, Kernwald bus stop, the circuit begins at Chabisstein. After just a few steps, the route enters the forest. Twelve activity stations on the Chärwaldräuber adventure trail are scattered among the trees; robber tales and information panels recount customs from earlier times. A treasure hunt, wooden-tower building and pine-cone target throwing provide playful variety along the way.
The trail climbs only gently, reaching its highest point near Zingel at around 590 m. Marked hiking trails alternate with shorter unmarked sections. The circuit leads through the Kernwald, the border forest between Obwalden and Nidwalden. Its landscape was shaped by a rockslide on the Stanserhorn. The Wichelsee lies around 500 m off the route, nestling against a rock face along its south-eastern shore.
Continuing around the circuit, the route remains among a rich variety of tree species and leads to a covered picnic area with a barbecue; dry firewood is provided. The trail then descends almost imperceptibly and returns after just over an hour to Chabisstein and the Kerns, Kernwald bus stop.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
