01/ Overview
The route
From the lakeshore to the historic mule track, this circular hike over the Renggpass combines steep woodland, traces of the Alpine fortress and views from Schofeld across Obwaldnerland.
From Alpnachstad railway station, the circular hike initially leads to Lake Lucerne. The lakeside path runs through Niederstad, with labelled trees and shrubs lining this level section. The route then turns away from the lake and climbs steeply through the forest. Along the historic mule track, which was already in use in Roman times, rock-hewn shelters and restored rock paintings recall the former Alpine fortress.
At the top of the Renggpass stands a boundary stone dating from 1706. From Schofeld, views open up across Obwaldnerland. Shortly afterwards, the mountain path reaches its highest point at around 880 m on the wooded Lopper before descending along the Loppergrat. The Acherchönzili lies directly on the route and marks a viewpoint on the long descent.
At the bottom, the path crosses the Achereggbrücke near Acheregg and then follows the lakeshore once again. A broad hiking trail leads through open stretches along the shore and past the first houses of Alpnachstad back to the railway station.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
