01/ Overview
The route
From Lake Lucerne, a strenuous ascent leads over the wooded Renggpass to the alpine pastures of Fräkmüntegg – with over 1,000 metres of elevation gain, this is a tour for fit mountain hikers.
From Alpnachstad railway station, the path climbs out past the first houses. Lake Lucerne is soon left behind as meadows and pastures open up views of the Pilatus massif. Via Grossrüti and along the Wolfortbach, the route steadily gains altitude before the forest becomes denser. After around an hour and a half, Renggpass is reached at just over 850 m.
Shortly afterwards, the path passes the Rengg chapel and initially descends gently towards Hinter Rengg. Then the long final ascent begins: at the Alpgschwänd mountain inn, the broad hiking trail becomes a steeper mountain path. Between open alpine pastures and forest, it continues uphill via Gschwänd; by the end, more than 1,000 metres of elevation gain have accumulated.
Near the destination stands the Fräkmünt mountain chapel. A little later, the route reaches Fräkmüntegg at around 1,400 m, also its highest point. The Fräkmüntegg stop is just a few steps from the end of the route.
