01/ Overview
The route
You will be surprised by the menhirs in Yverdon-Clendy, then immediately afterwards, you encounter the “Champ-Pittet” Pro Natura centre. You can immerse yourself in the reed landscape on the wooden walkways of the Grande Cariçaie, then climb up high to the observation tower to spot a variety of aquatic animals.
The hike, lasting just over five and a half hours, begins at the Yverdon-les-Bains stop. The route leaves the town along the Canal Oriental and shortly afterwards skirts the Canal des Anglais. Beyond the Château de Champittet, woodland, open meadows and small settlements characterise the long, almost level middle section.
At Cheyres, the route crosses the Passerelle de Cheyres through the wetland and reaches the shore of Lake Neuchâtel directly. It is the largest lake located entirely within Switzerland. The hiking trail then turns inland again. An observation platform in the forest clearings near Châbles makes a worthwhile place to pause.
A gentle ascent leads to the highest point of the hike at around 480 metres. The route continues through Font, passing the church, and on to Estavayer-le-Lac. After 22 kilometres, the hike ends at the Estavayer-le-Lac, hôpital stop.
