01/ Overview

The route

An excursion into the La Grande Cariçaie nature reserve offers a particularly special experience. One of the routes starts in Yvonand and leads along the southeast shore of Lac de Neuchâtel as far as Estavayer-le-Lac. A divine route through marshlands and lakeside woodlands.

From the Yvonand, Grand'Rue stop, the hike leads out of the village. The terrain remains almost level, with the trail alternating between woodland, open meadows and small settlements. Cheyres is reached after around an hour.

Beyond the village, the peaceful route continues through patches of woodland and across clearings. Near Châbles, a viewing platform stands directly beside the trail. Shortly afterwards, the route climbs almost imperceptibly to its highest point near Font, at around 440 m. Another platform offers views over the surrounding wetlands.

Approaching Estavayer-le-Lac, signs of settlement become more frequent. For a short stretch, the route leaves the marked hiking trail network before joining another hiking trail. Shortly before the destination, Lake Neuchâtel lies directly beside the route. It is the largest lake located entirely within Switzerland. After a total of 11 km and just over two and a half hours, the hike ends at the Estavayer-le-Lac boat landing.
