01/ Overview
The route
The mostly flat winter hiking trail leads through the snow-covered high valley of Gonten. The tour through the protected Gontenmoos moorland will captivate you with its unique nature and the numerous "Toobeschopfe" (old peat huts).
From the Jakobsbad (Kronbergbahn) stop, the winter hike initially leads away from the houses. At the valley restaurant, the peaceful section through open meadows begins. Beyond Campingplatz Jakobsbad, the terrain opens out and the trail climbs only gently.
The route avoids any major gradients and reaches its highest point at around 920 m, roughly halfway along near Chuterenegg. Open meadows and pastures also characterise the onward route. The trail crosses gently undulating terrain, with a few short uphill sections, towards Gontenbad; over the five kilometres, the total ascent amounts to only around 80 metres. Houses draw closer only at the beginning and end.
Towards the end, the first houses of Gontenbad come into view. The winter hiking trail leads into the village and to Gontenbad railway station, where the roughly five-kilometre tour ends after just over an hour and a half.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
