01/ Overview
The route
Forests steeped in legend, alpine meadows in hibernation, and the unique landscape of the Alpstein mountains in plain sight. This winter hike at the foot of Hoher Kasten offers an exceptional experience and is suitable for hikers in good physical condition.
The winter hike starts in the village at the Brülisau, Kastenbahn bus stop. The route soon leaves the houses behind and climbs through open terrain. For just over a kilometre, the trail follows the Brüelbach stream, after which sections of forest alternate with open pastures. The steady ascent accounts for a large proportion of the approximately 460 metres of elevation gain.
Just over a third of the way around the circuit, the route reaches the Plattenbödeli mountain inn, followed shortly afterwards by the Maria Heimsuchung chapel. Sämtisersee, situated at around 1'210 m, remains a good 100 metres off the route. The winter trail continues across open slopes and through forest to the highest point at around 1'320 m.
From there, the route descends again. Brülisau draws closer as the first houses appear; the Catholic Church of St. Sebastian stands directly beside the route. After around nine kilometres and a good three and a half hours, the circuit ends back at the Brülisau, Kastenbahn bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
