01/ Overview

The route

This trail leads you from the idyllic Kreuzbogen lake and the colourful Alpine flower trail via the romantic Almageller valley to Almagelleralp, and along the adventure trail to Furggstalden; the Almagelleralp mountain trail is unrivalled in the scenic variety it offers.

From the Kreuzboden stop, the mountain trail passes the Kreuzboden mountain restaurant and initially climbs through open terrain. After just the first section, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,530 m. This means that the main ascent is completed early on.

The long descent to Saas-Almagell now begins. The narrow mountain trail crosses pastures and increasingly rocky terrain, with short uphill sections adding variety. Overall, around 300 metres of ascent are offset by a good 1,050 metres of descent. Further down, the landscape changes: the trail enters the forest and steadily loses altitude. Along the way, Restaurant Alpina lies directly on the route.

Towards the end, the mountain trail becomes a yellow-marked hiking trail. The final metres lead down to Saas-Almagell, where the hike ends after just over three hours at the village square. The Saas-Almagell, Dorfplatz bus stop is located right by the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.

How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
