Kulturspur Appenzellerland, Stage 6/6

Heiden, a Biedermeier village and health resort, marks the start of the final stage on this cultural trail. The route takes you over gently rolling hills, with a brief detour through an exclave of Appenzell Innerrhoden, passing numerous hamlets and isolated farms. Your destination is Walzenhausen, perched high and proud above Lake Constance and commanding fantastic views.

The approximately eleven-kilometre hike begins at the Heiden, Post bus stop. Initially, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads through the village, then out onto open meadows and pastures. With steady ascents and descents, the route gradually gains height, while the landscape initially remains largely open.

Higher up, the forest draws closer. Near St. Anton, the trail reaches its highest point at around 930 metres. From there, the route is predominantly downhill. At Steigbüchel, a barbecue site lies directly on the route, before the easy hiking trail descends through wooded terrain towards Walzenhausen. In total, the descent amounts to around 460 metres.

Towards the end, the first houses appear closer to the trail. It passes the Protestant church and continues through Walzenhausen to the destination. After just under three hours, the hike ends directly at the Walzenhausen stop.
