The route
Enjoy this route through the unspoilt Appenzell landscape with captivating views over the Bodensee (Lake Constance), as far as Vorarlberg and into Allgäu. Information panels along the route hold interesting facts about local medicinal plants.
The hike, which takes just over an hour, begins at the Rehetobel, Kaien bus stop. Initially, the route leads through the settlement of Kaien and, for a short stretch, away from the marked hiking-trail network. It soon joins the yellow-marked hiking trail, which climbs gently across open meadows and pastures. The unmarked opening section requires some care with route-finding.
Among the scattered houses of the Appenzeller Vorderland, open terrain alternates with quiet stretches of woodland. The route climbs for the most part, gaining around 200 metres in elevation overall. Short descents provide some variety without changing the predominantly uphill character. The highest point is therefore not reached until almost the very end.
On the heights of St. Anton, the trail reaches its highest point at just over 1,100 m. St. Anton Chapel stands directly on the route, with the viewpoint just a few steps farther on. The four-kilometre hike ends after just over an hour at the nearby Oberegg AI, St. Anton Kapelle bus stop.
