Alpine Panorama Trail, Stage 2/29

From Trogen (AR) over two gentle hills with wonderful views of the Säntis, the city of St.Gallen, Bodensee and the undulating Appenzell region, to the wide valley basin of Appenzell with its richly-adorned «citizens' houses».

From the Trogen, Landsgemeindeplatz bus stop, the route soon leaves the village behind. The hiking trail climbs across meadows and through stretches of woodland. After just under three kilometres, it reaches its highest point near Hohe Buche at around 1,140 m. Shortly afterwards, the Rämsen barbecue area offers a suitable place for a rest.

The trail now descends to Bühler, alternating between open pastures and woodland. Beyond the village, the route continues through peaceful, gently undulating terrain. The Maria Hilf chapel stands in the forest, a tranquil waypoint directly on the route.

In the final third, the descents become longer and Appenzell draws closer between the meadows. After 13 kilometres and around four hours, the hike ends in the village near the parish church of St. Mauritius. The Neoclassical nave was built in 1824/25, while the choir and tower of the Late Gothic church were preserved. The Appenzell, Adlerplatz bus stop is around 100 m from the finish.
