01/ Overview

The route

From Teufen, you will follow the Goldibach stream to Dietenschwendi, at the heart of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Admire the grand town houses in the villages of Speicher and Trogen, then spot the traditional scattered settlements and isolated farms as you pass through the hilly landscape.

From Teufen railway station, the hike initially leads out of the village. Open meadows and pastures soon dominate the landscape, interspersed with short stretches of woodland and scattered clusters of houses. The hiking trail, marked in yellow throughout, climbs at a pleasant, steady pace. Just over halfway along, the route reaches its highest point near Hohe Buche at around 1,050 m. By this point, most of the approximately 400 metres of ascent has been completed.

The trail then descends through the hilly landscape towards Speicher. In the village, Café Böhli lies directly on the route and is a good place for a break. The final section continues to Trogen, alternating between meadows, woodland edges and residential areas. After around nine kilometres and just over two and a half hours, the hike ends near Trogen railway station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
