01/ Overview
The route
On this tour you can enjoy a splendid panorama of St Gallen, with its abbey that was registered as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site in 1983. In summer, the Art Nouveau Drei Weieren swimming baths entice bathers to take a cool dip.
From St. Gallen Haggen station, the hiking trail leads out of the neighbourhood. Crossing meadows and passing through open woodland, the route climbs to Solitüde. It then descends to Riethüsli and crosses the built-up area of St. Gallen before returning to the countryside.
At Buebenweier, the trail reaches the Steinach and follows it from here onwards. Woodland and open pastures alternate, with the stream setting the direction for long stretches. The yellow-waymarked hiking trail gains elevation steadily. After a good eight kilometres, the highest point is reached near Hohe Buche at around 920 m.
Shortly afterwards, the descent begins towards the artificial Wenigerweiher, with the trail running directly along its shore. The Steinach also accompanies the final section through woodland and between meadows. After around eleven kilometres and just over three hours, the tour ends at Schwarzen Bären; the St. Gallen, Bach St. Georgen bus stop is located directly at the finish.
