01/ Overview
The route
Herisau, Appenzell's oldest parish seat, is the starting point of this stage. The route leads through the multifaceted hilly landscape of Appenzell and Toggenburg, past hamlets and farms, to the former textile centre of Wattwil.
The long hike begins at the Herisau, Obstmarkt bus stop and leads through the main town. Near the Reformed church, the trail gradually leaves the houses behind and climbs through forest to the Nieschberg viewpoint. Meadows, pastures and stretches of forest then alternate as the yellow-waymarked hiking trail continues uphill via Risi.
Shortly after reaching Restaurant Sitz, the route arrives at its highest point at around 1,080 metres, near Hochwacht. It continues over open hills to Chäseren. Longer descents and short counter-climbs lead to Sankt Peterzell, where the Reformed church stands directly on the route.
Via Hofstetten and Heiterswil, the undulating route continues between pastures and forest. In the final third, the houses of Wattwil draw closer. Shortly before the destination, the trail follows the Thur, then leads through the town to Wattwil railway station.
