01/ Overview
The route
Laura the Goat is centre-stage on this tour of the environs of Gais. Hike through the moorlands with views of the hill country as you pass Laura's favourite spots: an idyllic lakelet, goat sheds, a training track for goat kids, and seats with views of Mount Säntis.
From the Gais stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads out of the village. Crossing open meadows and pastures, the route climbs into the typical rolling countryside of the Appenzellerland. Sections of woodland add variety, while clearings in between open up views of the surrounding heights. The ascent is pleasantly spread over the first half of the approximately ten-kilometre circuit.
Near the Gäbris, the trail reaches its highest point at around 1,240 metres. The summit itself lies slightly off the route. It is the northernmost Swiss Pre-Alpine summit over 1,200 metres in elevation. The trail then leads through woodland and across pastureland back towards Gais. After just over three hours, the circuit ends in the village. Not far from the trail, the Reformed church stands on the village square and is among the cultural properties of national significance in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The Gais stop is right by the starting point.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
