Appenzeller Rundweg

The Appenzell region has retained it's original charm, which makes it a particularly appealing area to visit. Time-honoured customs, flourishing agriculture and hospitality also play their part, and the region holds a magnetic attraction for tourists. This route gives you an extensive insight.

From Appenzell railway station, the yellow-marked hiking trail soon leaves the village behind. Between the edges of settlements and open meadows, the route climbs only gently. After around two and a half kilometres, it reaches its highest point near Chlosterspitz at approximately 840 metres. Short stretches of woodland add variety to the open landscape, which is characterised by scattered settlements.

The trail soon descends to Weissbad. From there, the circuit continues with gentle ups and downs to Steinegg. The Chapel of St Anna stands directly on the route, providing a tranquil landmark along the way. Meadows, isolated houses and wooded sections then alternate as the trail gradually leads back to Appenzell.

Towards the end, the surroundings become more densely built up again. In the village centre, the route passes the Parish Church of St Mauritius, whose Neoclassical nave dates from the early 19th century. Shortly afterwards, the seven-kilometre circuit ends back at Appenzell railway station after just under two hours.
