01/ Overview
The route
The Hauptgasse in Appenzell, the old Reichsstrasse to Gontenbad, the Barfussweg on Moosboden to Jakobsbad and the Besinnungsweg leading through Alpine pastures and woodlands offer a rich variety of hiking experiences. Urnäsch beckons with its Appenzell Customs Museum.
From the Appenzell, Adlerplatz bus stop, a short access path leads to the starting point in the village. The yellow-marked hiking trail soon leaves the houses behind and crosses open meadows and pastures to Gontenbad. Rather than a long, steep ascent, the first half is characterised by gentle ups and downs.
From Gonten, the route continues to Jakobsbad. Settlements alternate with open farmland, while the approximately 420 metres of ascent are spread over several gentle climbs. The monastery church lies close to the route and provides a striking landmark before the final major ascent begins.
Towards the end, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1'010 m. From there, it is mostly downhill to Urnäsch. After around 13 kilometres and just over three and a half hours, the hike ends almost directly at Urnäsch railway station.
