01/ Overview
The route
Discover the cunning and quick-witted jokes of Appenzell and let yourself be seduced by the dreamy landscape of the Appenzellerland with a breath-taking view over Lake Constance to southern Germany, the Rhine delta and the Bregenz bay.
From the Heiden stop, the trail sets off close to the highest point of the hike. Within just a few minutes, the route is running at around 800 metres. It then leaves the village and follows a yellow-marked hiking trail through open meadows and pastures. Around 260 metres of ascent and slightly more descent make for a pleasantly varied route.
In Wolfhalden, the trail passes the Reformed church on its way to the 3-Länder-Blick viewpoint. The surroundings then become quieter. Between the villages, open slopes alternate with stretches of woodland as the route heads east in gentle undulations. The Eichenbach barbecue site provides an opportunity for a break in the forest.
Towards the end, the landscape opens up again. Passing the Panorama Café, the trail reaches Walzenhausen. After eight kilometres and just over two hours, the hike ends directly by the Walzenhausen stop.

How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
