01/ Overview
The route
This impressive mountain hike around the headwaters of the river Aare connects the Grimsel Pass with the Oberaarsee lake. With two self-operated cable cars, this excursion is suitable for the whole family.
The starting point is the upper station of the Sidelhornbahn; the nearest public transport stop, Grimsel Passhöhe, is around 600 metres away. The white-red-white waymarked mountain trail climbs briskly across open slopes. The Grimselsee remains far below, while the Sidelhorn dominates the rocky surroundings. After just under two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,500 m, well below the 2,764 m summit.
The narrow mountain trail now continues through barren, boulder-strewn terrain, with steady ascents and descents. After just over three kilometres, the Triebtenseewli lies directly on the route. From this mountain lake, the path continues to Bäregg, the pass in the final third of the route.
From Bäregg, the final section leads through rocky terrain towards Oberaar. The nearest stop, Grimsel Passhöhe, is almost five kilometres from the destination. After around five kilometres and just over two hours, the route ends away from public transport at Berghaus Oberaar.
