01/ Overview
The route
A marvellous high-level trail, a scenic tour from Oberwald to Andermatt: Day 1: sensational panoramic views of the Rhone Glacier, Lauteraarhorn and Finsteraarhorn. Day 2: pleasant hike on the Urschner Höhenweg with much to discover en route.
From the Oberwald stop, the route initially leads out of the village before soon joining a mountain hiking trail. It climbs across open slopes to Gletsch. From there, the trail continues steadily uphill, drawing step by step closer to the stark pass landscape.
After around eleven kilometres, the route reaches the Furka Pass at 2,429 m. It links the Goms region of Valais with the Urseren Valley in the canton of Uri; the European watershed between the Mediterranean and the North Sea also runs through here. Shortly after the top of the pass, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,460 m.
On the Uri side, the mountain trail remains in open terrain for a long stretch. Via Tiefenbach, the extended traverse eventually leads into the long descent to Andermatt. Only towards the end does the trail widen again, reaching the village near the Andermatt, Tourist Info stop. At 35 kilometres, with around 2,100 metres of ascent and a hiking time of approximately 13 hours, this is a very demanding day hike.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
