01/ Overview
The route
The tour takes you to Eastern Switzerland's Grand Canyon, the Ofenloch. This spectacular gorge is an insiders' tip for hikers and explorers, due to its remote location between Neckertal and Toggenburg.
From the Schwägalp, Säntis-Schwebebahn stop, the hiking trail crosses open pastures and passes through woodland towards Toggenburg. The 15-kilometre tour begins relatively gently but, with a total ascent of around 720 metres, requires stamina. After the first few kilometres, the path becomes a mountain trail and leads through rockier terrain. Not far from the route lies the Ofenloch, a gorge and grotto in the headwaters of the Necker.
Alternating between pastures and woodland, the route continues to climb. Near Hinderfallenchopf, it reaches its highest point at just over 1,500 metres. By this stage, most of the ascent has been completed. The long descent then follows: the waymarked hiking trail loses around 1,200 metres in elevation across wooded slopes and open farmland. After about five hours, the hike ends in Ennetbühl, just a few steps from the Ennetbühl, Dorf stop.
