01/ Overview
The route
The route follows the Thur to its source on Mount Säntis, through the varied Toggenburg landscape, to the plains of the Thur Valley and the Zurich wine-growing region, where the Thur flows into the Rhine.
The 160-kilometre route begins at the Gamplüt bus stop. Shortly after the start, it reaches its highest point near Stei at around 1,350 m. The trail initially descends steeply, crossing open slopes and woodland into Toggenburg. Near Unterwasser, the two-tiered Säntisthur cascade lies a short distance off the route. The trail continues down the valley through Alt St. Johann, Nesslau and Ebnat-Kappel to Wattwil, where it passes the Church of St Felix and Regula.
Beyond Wattwil, stretches of woodland, meadows and villages alternate. The ruins of Rüdberg stand directly beside the trail, followed by Bütschwil and Lütisburg. In Bischofszell, the route passes the castle and St John’s Church before continuing via Kradolf and Weinfelden through the more open countryside of Thurgau.
From Frauenfeld, the final section leads via Kartause Ittingen to Uesslingen. For stretches, the route runs alongside the Brunewasser, Unterer Binnenkanal and Binnenkanal Thur waterways. It continues through Gütighausen and Andelfingen, past the Reformed church, to Rüdlingen. The destination is at the Gemeindehaus bus stop.
