01/ Overview

The route

Unterwasser is the starting point of this route. It leads you leisurely through Toggenburg territory and along the riverbank through the enchanting Thurtal Valley to Starkenbach. An exceptionally picturesque route for true lovers of untouched nature.

From the Unterwasser, Dorf bus stop, the walk initially leads through the village. Following a broad, yellow-waymarked hiking trail, the route climbs only gently and reaches its highest point, at around 910 m, shortly after the start. From there, the terrain remains almost level. Passing between houses and open meadows, the trail continues down the valley towards Alt St. Johann.

In the village, the route passes close to the monastery. Beyond it, pastures and scattered settlements once again shape the landscape. With no significant climbs, the walk continues along a comfortable hiking trail towards Starkenbach; near the end, the path descends gently to the lowest section of the route. After around five kilometres and just over an hour, Starkenbach is reached. The Alt St. Johann, Starkenbach bus stop is right at the destination, allowing for the return journey without any additional walking.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
