01/ Overview

The route

The Toggenburger Höhenweg presents hikers with one of the most beautiful but also one of the most challenging hiking routes in the St. Gallen countryside. Breathtaking and incomparable views constantly draw your gaze down into the lush green Thurtal valley.

From the Wildhaus, Dorf bus stop, the multi-day route leads out of the village and onto meadows and pastures above Toggenburg. After a gentle start, the mountain trail becomes steeper and climbs near the Glattchamm to its highest point at around 1,830 m. It then continues via Vorder Höhi, steadily ascending and descending through open Alpine foothills.

Beyond the pass, mountain trails, broad hiking paths, Alpine pastures and woodland alternate. The route passes Tanzboden, descends to Ricken and climbs via Oberricken to Tweralpspitz. After further ridges and stretches of woodland, it reaches the 1,291 m Schnebelhorn, the highest summit in the canton of Zurich.

From Hulftegg, the route descends to Mühlrüti, following the Mühlrütibach for just over a kilometre. Via Iddaburg and Dietschwil, the long hike gradually loses elevation, with meadows, woodland and the first houses alternating along the way. After around 88 kilometres, it ends at Wil SG railway station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
