01/ Overview

The route

This is a tour for those who like uphill hiking: The path first crosses a colourful sea of flowers all the way to Alp Tesel, then zigzags higher and higher across Zwingli Pass and Rotstein Pass. You can see the destination far ahead, before the route ends via Lisengrat on Mt. Säntis, the most prominent mountain in Eastern Switzerland.

From the Gamplüt stop, the trail initially crosses open meadows and pastures. The gentle opening section soon comes to an end, after which the white-red-white marked mountain trail climbs more steeply. Most of the approximately 1,500 metres of ascent are covered within the first five kilometres.

At the foot of the Altmann, the Zwinglipasshütte of the SAC Toggenburg Section stands directly on the route. The Zwinglipass lies slightly off the trail, which continues through increasingly rocky terrain. Passing the 2,435 m limestone peak of the Altmann, the route undulates steadily towards the Rotsteinpass. The mountain inn stands directly on the pass at just over 2,100 m.

The final ascent continues over rocky terrain towards the Säntis. After around five hours and ten kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at just under 2,500 m by the Alter Säntis mountain inn. A few steps further on, the hike ends at the summit of the Säntis, with views extending across six countries.

    • Gamplüt-Säntis-Weg

      Until further notice

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • There may be snow on this hiking trail. Bring appropriate gear and plan accordingly.

How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
