01/ Overview
The route
The Jura plateau of Les Fourgs and Les Granges de Sainte-Croix is over 1,000 metres above sea level. The territory between Switzerland and France was disputed for many years, as demonstrated by a wall and numerous border stones. This educational trail uses eleven information boards to shed light on the fascinating history of the France–Switzerland border.
The circular hike begins directly at the L'Auberson, La Grand'Borne bus stop. A marked hiking trail initially leads through the open Jura landscape to Vers-chez-Henri. Meadows and pastures dominate the scenery, interspersed with patches of woodland.
After around six kilometres, the route leaves the marked hiking trail network. The long middle section crosses open terrain and passes through woodland; a little more care with navigation is required here. By Chalet des Prés, well over half the route has been completed. Shortly afterwards, near Mauvais Crêt, the hike reaches its highest point at just under 1,200 metres.
The circuit then continues gently up and down through the mosaic of pastures and woodland. Towards the end, it rejoins a marked hiking trail. After 16 kilometres and just over four hours, the hike ends at the starting point; the bus stop is only a few steps away.
