01/ Overview
The route
From the Rifugio Pian Grand you climb steeply up to the Fil de Boleta over passes, through breath-taking gaps in the mountains, through troughs and valleys, past lakes like Lac Trescolmen and «Herzlisee» lake to the main base, the Capanna Buffalora, which is the only manned and serviced hut in the Calanca valley.
A challenging high-level hike of around 15 km begins at Rifugio Pian Grand. Shortly after the start, the mountain trail reaches its highest point on Cresta Bedoleta at just over 2,500 m. Rocky terrain characterises the opening section, followed by a long descent to Lagh de Trescolmen.
The route then alternates between open pastures and stony slopes. Marked white-red-white, the trail continues with steady ascents and descents to Bocchetta de Buscenel and onwards through the barren mountain landscape. Towards the end, Lagh de Calvaresc lies directly beside the route. At around 2,200 m, the mountain lake provides another striking place to rest before the final section leads to Capanna Buffalora. In total, the hike involves around 1,300 metres of ascent and 1,600 metres of descent, with a walking time of approximately eight hours.
The starting point is not served directly by public transport and lies just under 5 km from the Alp de Confin stop. From the destination, it is also around 2 km to the nearest stop in Sta. Domenica.
