01/ Overview

The route

From the San Bernardino Pass along the Laghetto Moesola, through the Mucia Alp trough to the lakes at the di Passit pass. On over the Pass de la Cruseta and the Bocca de Rogna overlooking the Misox mountains. Around the foothills of the Piz Pian Grand to the Rifugio Pian Grand hut.

The mountain hike begins at the San Bernardino hospice, right by the S. Bernardino, Ospizio bus stop. After just a few steps, the mountain path passes Laghetto Moesola. This small lake lies at the summit of the San Bernardino Pass, where both the watershed and the language border between German and Italian run. The route then crosses open terrain, initially losing some elevation.

Across broad pastures and increasingly rocky slopes, a long ascent follows in a steady succession of ups and downs. After around four hours, the path reaches Pass di Passit; shortly afterwards, Lago Passit lies close to the trail. Beyond the lake, the surroundings become more barren as the mountain path climbs towards Pass de la Cruseta.

Near Piz d’Arbeola, the route reaches its highest point at around 2,460 m. The summit stands between Val Calanca and Val Mesolcina. The path then descends through rocky terrain. The nearest public transport stop, Alp de Confin, is around 5 km from the destination. The final descent leads to Rifugio Pian Grand.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
