01/ Overview
The route
Easy yet almost high-alpine hike along the historical Splügen Pass route to the high plateau of the Suretta lakes.
The circular hike begins in Splügen and leaves the village behind after just a few minutes. The mountain trail soon climbs steeply through open meadows and pastures. The ascent remains steep for long stretches and leads into increasingly barren, rocky terrain. In total, around 880 metres of elevation must be gained.
After a little over two hours, the route reaches its highest point near the Seehorn at around 2,280 m. Immediately afterwards, the Ober Surettasee lies directly beside the trail. This mountain lake forms the tranquil centrepiece of the circuit and is an ideal place for a rest before the long return journey. The mountain trail then heads back down into the valley, initially across open slopes and later through forest. Towards the end, the terrain becomes gentler, and the final stretch leads back to Splügen. A little over four and a half hours should be allowed for the 13-kilometre hike.
