Via Capricorn, Stage 3/3

Piggamad marks the start of the steep and challenging climb to the Alperschälli, where you often come across capricorns. Skirting the Farcletta digl Lai Grand and the tarns of Lai Grand and Lai Pintg, you cross the legendary Alp Anarosa to arrive at Wergenstein.

From the Thalkirch, Turrahus bus stop, the mountain trail initially leads through the open Safiental. After passing the Wanna balancing reservoir, the long ascent begins across pastures and increasingly rocky terrain. The Bodenhorn remains off the route as the trail climbs towards the Farcletta digl Lai Grand. Shortly after the pass, it reaches its highest point at around 2'660 m. At the Alperschälli wildlife observation points, the view extends across the barren, open slopes.

A long descent begins on the other side. For a short stretch, the route follows the Raptgusa, then passes close to Lai Grand. Farther down, it leaves the marked hiking trail network for almost three kilometres and crosses open, at times rocky terrain. The mountain trail then resumes, descending across the slopes of the Schamserberg to the first houses of Wergenstein. After passing Hotel Restaurant Capricorns and the heritage-listed Reformed church, it is only a few more steps to the Wergenstein, Dorf bus stop.
