Walserweg, Stage 4/19

The route climbs through the hilly countryside of the Safien valley between mighty Grisons mountains to the Camaner huts at 1,982 metres above sea level before descending to Safien-Platz. There are no other villages in the entire valley. As in traditional Walser settlement culture, the buildings lie scattered over the hillsides.

The mountain trail through the upper Safiental begins at the Thalkirch, Turrahus bus stop. It initially crosses open meadows to Thalkirch, passing directly by the Reformed church and its walled cemetery. The settlement is soon left behind. The path climbs higher while the terrain remains broad and open.

With steady ups and downs, the route gains around 400 metres in elevation overall. About halfway along, it reaches its highest point at just under 2,000 m. From there, the route is predominantly downhill. The mountain trail crosses pastures to Camanaboda and shortly afterwards passes Hotel Camana. Open slopes and sections of forest then alternate. The long descent to Safien Platz drops markedly towards the end.

After 11 kilometres and just over three hours, the hike ends in the village. The Safien Platz bus stop is less than 100 metres away. The total descent is around 780 metres, so the downhill section is the defining feature of the second half of the hike.
