The long ascent out of the village begins at the Vals, Post bus stop. At the village square, the route passes directly by the parish church of St Peter and St Paul before leaving the last houses behind. The mountain path, marked in white-red-white, climbs steadily across open meadows and alpine pastures, gaining around 1'200 metres in elevation over 13 kilometres.

Higher up, the landscape becomes more barren. After a good three hours, the route reaches its highest point near the Strätscherhorn at around 2'410 m. Shortly afterwards comes the Tomülpass, which connects the Valsertal and Safiental. The mountain path now descends on the other side of the valley, initially across open terrain and later through forest.

After a good five hours and a descent of around 740 metres, the hike ends in Safien-Platz. A bus stop is located immediately by the finish.
