Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 9/43

The high plateau of Plaun da Greina is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a symbolic character, an extensive water meadow, laced with small streams. The change of rock and continental microclimate are also of interest.

From the Vrin, vitg bus stop, the mountain trail climbs out of the village to Cons. Beyond the last houses, the terrain opens up; the route ascends steadily across meadows and alpine pastures. After a good three hours, it reaches Pass Diesrut, a mule track between Val Lumnezia and the Surselva. Shortly afterwards comes the highest point, at around 2,430 m. Here, the open terrain is already interspersed with rocks.

A long descent leads to Camona da Terri, the hut belonging to the Piz Terri Section of the Swiss Alpine Club. It takes its name from Piz Terri, the highest peak in the Greina. The mountain trail then sweeps in a broad arc across the open plateau before continuing once more between rocky slopes.

Towards the end, the route climbs to Passo della Greina at 2,354 m. The pass lies on the cantonal border between Graubünden and Ticino and was already used by the Romans. After the final descent, the hike ends at Cap. Scaletta. The destination is not served directly by public transport; the nearest stop, Pian Geirett, is around 600 m away.
