01/ Overview
The route
The Obersaxen Walser Trail combines a fascinating landscape with the cultural history of the Walser people and the exciting and diverse natural setting of the Graubünden mountains.
From the Obersaxen, Giraniga bus stop, the mountain trail, marked white-red-white, leads out of the hamlet. At Pilavarda, the landscape opens up; crossing open meadows and pastures, the route climbs steadily to the heights above Obersaxen. The ascent defines the first half of the hike and accounts for most of the approximately 500 metres of elevation gain. Just over halfway, the highest point is reached near Stein at around 1,700 m.
The trail then turns downhill. Open terrain continues to dominate as the mountain trail descends at length towards Miraniga. Between the scattered hamlets, the character of Obersaxen is particularly evident: broad pasture slopes alternate with small settlements. Via Miraniga, the route finally approaches Meierhof. After around ten kilometres and just over three hours, the hike ends at the Obersaxen, Meierhof Talstation bus stop.
