Senda Sursilvana, Stage 4/5

A culturally and historically rich stage. Famous fresco painting in the Waltensburg church; commemoration of the invasion of the weakened Suvorov army in Panix at the beginning of October 1799; interesting megaliths near the church in Falera.

From the Breil/Brigels, casa communala bus stop, the route initially leads to Lag da Breil. The village is soon left behind along the shore of the small lake. The mountain path, marked with white-red-white signs, then crosses open meadows and pastures as well as longer stretches of forest. Small settlements punctuate the long traverse. Another ascent begins at Pigniu. Near Crap Gries, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1,500 metres.

The path then descends via Siat to Ruschein. Here, the narrower mountain path becomes a yellow-marked hiking trail. Stretches of forest continue to alternate with open slopes. The route leads through the villages of the Surselva to Falera, passing close to the Sacred Heart Church. The final section loses further elevation and ends in Laax at the Laax GR, Bergbahnen bus stop. A good nine hours should be allowed for the approximately 32-kilometre tour with around 1,100 metres of ascent.
