01/ Overview

The route

From the village of Val down to the bridge and across the Rein da Sumvitg. This is followed by a strenuous 700-metre elevation gain on steep, narrow paths up through the forest and over pastures and meadows. Up to the destination, there are still two torrent ditches to cross and a few opposing climbs to overcome. You have now completed it: the Walserweg Gottardo trail, which is around 200 kilometres long, ends in the Walser settlement of St. Martin.

The hike starts in the small village of Val at the Surrein, Val bus stop. The mountain path, marked in white-red-white, initially loses altitude before turning into the long ascent. The route climbs through extensive forest. With around 1,150 metres of ascent overall, stamina is required.

As the altitude increases, open meadows and pastures replace the forest. Continuing steadily up and down, the mountain path approaches Tgiern Pign. In the final third, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,640 m. It then gradually turns downhill again.

The descent to Obersaxen once again leads through forest and across open pastureland. After about six hours, the roughly 16-kilometre hike ends in St. Martin. The bus stop of the same name is only a few steps from the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
